‘After marriage, husband and wife
become two sides of a coin; they just can't face each other, but still they
stay together.’ – Hemant Joshi
[Listen to the song while reading :3 I did while writing]
Arnav sat on the bed with his back resting against
the header and his legs stretched straight into the blanket. He held the soft
furry notebook in his hands and tried opening it but he couldn’t. It was
locked. This time the lock wasn’t like the old times small Dollarama lock which
could be open with even a hair pin. It was a different lock.
“Talking lock? What the!” Arnav’s mouth fell at the
immaturity of Khushi’s. He sat there… thinking of what could be her password.
For him it could surely be like ‘I hate Raakshas’
or ‘Laad Governor’ and maybe
her all-time favourite line of mine ‘what the!’. The chances of ‘Unbelievable’
were pretty low, but his thoughts kept going around in his brain as if there
was a circus going on.
“Why am I even thinking about something relating to
me as a password?!” he wondered. “Jalebis"
he said out loud, not enough to be heard out of the room.
But still, the diary didn’t open.
Arnav’s hand ran through his hair as he stood up to
walk towards his balcony. It was now 3:14pm in the afternoon and he had been
trying to unlock Khushi’s diary but it just won’t open. He had tried numerous
kinds of passwords, but none of them worked.
One thought had been bothering him ever since the
whole password idea had started, but he didn’t want to try that thought. His heart was telling him to try it, but his mind was
telling him not to. He didn’t know which to listen to.
But then… his Di’s words hit him.
‘She loves you Chhotte and you know it’
‘As much as you deny this, but somewhere deep down
in your heart… you love her as much as she loves you!’
He thought of testing it. For the first time, and
the last.
Arnav lifted the diary and with all his courage, he
said something he never wanted to say, “I love you Arnavji”
“Password
accepted” the diary said in return.
In not less than a second, the diary and fallen on
the floor and Arnav stood there like a statue. He couldn’t digest the fact that
yes… there was still someone out there who loved him after all the wrong and
harmful deeds he had done to hurt his loved ones.
Bending down, he hesitantly picked up Khushi’s diary
and opened it. His intentions weren’t bad, but somehow he couldn’t trust Khushi.
She can lie to him and everyone else around her, but she’ll never lie to her
diary.
When he found her first diary entry, he was utterly
shocked that she had never dated her entries. They were just on a new page
every time she wrote something.
Skimming through her diary, his eye caught the time
when she mentioned her new family,
Dear diary,
After mum and dad left, I felt so lonely and I felt
no one loved me. But then Shashi uncle adopted me, kept me with him along with
his family. I felt loved again by my new found mother and father along with my
sister; Lavanya. She was mean at first but slowly she got used to me. Today she
yelled at me for no reason… dad had asked me to call her but she wasn’t
listening. There. She snapped at me.
‘I knew she hated Lavanya! I knew it!’ Arnav thought
in his mind. He was blinded into thinking Khushi hated Lavanya. He never
noticed her sacrifices… her love for her family, for his family… for him.
But there was nothing that could be done. He had
loved Lavanya dearly, and now she was no more. He blamed Khushi for it.
First Lavanya, and then the family. He thought that
it was all Khushi’s fault.
Because she survived.
Flipping through the pages he landed on another page
which mentioned his name.
Arnavji. Words can’t explain how arrogant and mean
he is. Anger is always at the tip of his nose and smiling is restricted from
his face. And that lopsided smile he gives! It makes me want to strangle him
for being so… so adorable! Oh my gosh! I don’t even know what’s happening to
me! But this is not supposed to happen! This is wrong! Arnavji hates me and I
hate him! I can’t ever feel that way towards him! Lavanya and Arnavji are
engaged! This is wrong. I have to control my feelings for him…
Shock had spread across Arnav’s face and words
couldn’t describe how he was feeling right now. She truly did feel that way for
him. But did he feel that way for her?
Did he have feelings for her in that way? Or did he
still hate her for everything?
Closing her diary, he slipped under the covers and
stared up at the ceiling. Things were changing so fast. Never had he ever
imagined getting married to Khushi Kumari Gupta. It was never an option and
here he was now. Married to Khushi Kumari Gupta; sister of his dead fiancé.
Arnav had never thought that he would lose the love
of his life and his family. Yes, his parents had already passed away before,
but now it was his sister and the rest of his family.
True that he shifted all the way to San Francisco
and he had everything anyone could ever ask for but deep down he knew what he
wanted. He wanted his family. But that wasn’t possible anymore. His family was
gone forever.
Leaving India wasn’t so easy as he had thought it
would be. Everyday when he stepped out of his room, he always expected to see
his sister Anjali, holding a pooja
thaal and praying to God; which he never believed in. He expected to
see his Nani sitting on the sofa, sipping her tea while patting her goat,
Laxmiji. He expected to see Payal and Akash secretly romancing in the kitchen
and of course, he expected his fiancé to be walking around with Maamiji.
However, he didn’t see this in the morning. All he
saw was Khushi, sitting at the porch and watching outside.
They rarely ever talked since their wedding and now
she was just the quiet one. She never laughed and she barely ever smiled.
Everything had changed.
Just that one accident.
Everything had changed.
After Lavanya’s death he had decided to shift to San
Francisco to try and reconcile himself. But it was only then when he got the
news that his entire family had been in a car crash; including both Guptas’ and
Raizadas’. Only one survived.
For the most, he hoped it was his Di, but he was
wrong.
It was Khushi.
She was wounded and had scrapes on her face, but she
was alive.
Out of all of them, only she was alive.
There was no way he could back out from his promise
that he made to his sister.
He promised he would marry Khushi, and keep her
safe.
And that was how he ended up marrying his worst
enemy of all.
Where was NK in all this time?
Well, he had left for Australia, the moment Arnav
had left for San Francisco. He wasn’t there during the accident and he knew that
only Khushi survived.
***
“I’m going to the beach ok,” Khushi knocked on
Arnav’s door and slipped on her flats to head out.
She often went to the beach when she felt upset and
confused. Watching the waves crashing and the sunset helped her to be calm.
She was wearing her light blue summer dress and held
a book in her hand.
The beach wasn’t so far away from the house and she
just walked it there to have some fresh air. Being emotional was one of her
weaknesses and she hated it. There was no record of how many times she cursed
herself for surviving.
She knew that Arnav didn’t hate her. He hated her
luck. The luck that could’ve been with someone else in the family. He hated the
promise he made to Anjali. Maybe he did hate Khushi.
Khushi sighed as she rubbed her arms up and down as
the wind blew. Her hair flowing in the air and she couldn’t help but let the
tears out.
The tears that she had hidden for the past 6 months
since everything changed.
She knew there was no point in crying because it
wouldn’t change the truth, but she had to let it out.
The pain she felt, the hurt and sadness that filled
her heart was just too much for her. She inhaled a large amount of oxygen
before breaking down.
The book she was reading was right next her and her
hands were covering her face. Tears sprung down her cheeks, ‘If only I didn’t
make the choice to go to the Mandir…
we all could’ve been happy. Arnavji could’ve been happy even without Lavanya.
It was my entire fault! Twice! I had done it twice! I couldn’t save anyone!’
she screamed to herself.
Crying to herself, she only thought of how much pain
she caused to everyone around her. Today she wouldn’t have been here and Arnav
could’ve been happily married to Lavanya. Anjali, Nani, Maami, Akash, and Payal
would’ve been alive.
Everything could’ve been fine.
But she ruined it.
She ruined everything and she hated herself for it.
The phone ringing and her jump a little in shock.
Sniffing and wiping her tears away, she hesitantly picked up her phone, “Are
you coming home or not?” she knew who it was already. Of course it was Arnav.
Through everything that had happened, they both still wanted to know whether
one is fine or not.
Even the simplest conversations were fine for them.
They kept a distance from each other but it was
understandable.
Nothing could ever change the way they felt for each
other. Anjali had tried her level best to at least try and make them talk to
each other with a bit of respect and kindness. But no. Situations got worst
when Lavanya died. Arnav’s hate increased for Khushi. Anjali couldn’t do anything.
The hate was always there.
There was no love.
“Well I’m just going to stay here for a little
longer. I don’t think you even want me in the house,” she replied coldly. There
was never a chance for them to speak to each other with some softness. It was
always a cold conversation.
Neither of them would ever try and compromise,
especially Arnav. His hate would only increase when Khushi showed attitude to
him. His inner beast would appear and though he never really abused Khushi
physically. There was no number of how many times he had made her cry and how
many times he had hurt her emotionally.
Arnav would hurt her, but those tears that shed down
her cheeks would always make him regret his actions. Apology, sorry, or thank you
were the words that he never used for Khushi. He had stopped the simple words
of hi and bye ever since Khushi survived.
It was an exception that he was cold towards Khushi,
but now, he was cold with everyone. Staff, and people he worked with were well aware
of the situation. They knew his loss and they tried their best to not annoy him
or give him a reason to be angry.
“Of course I don’t want you in the house! But that
stupid promise I made… just come home now!” he yelled through the phone. Khushi
was taken back a bit but it didn’t change her attitude, “I can hear you Mr.
Arnav Singh Raizada. There is no need to yell,”
This was how it was. The argument between the two
started off with the smallest reasons and ended up causing huge arguments.
Both of them had equal egos.
“I need you in the house in 5 minutes, and that’s an
order.” His tone was harsh and filled with anger.
Khushi sighed, getting up on her feet and she
reluctantly agreed on coming home, “I’ll be there in 10 minutes,” she cut the
call before Arnav could argue with her. Arnav had always been punctual. His
timing was 99 percent accurate and he hated being late or people being late. He
very well knew that Khushi wasn’t the one who would handle his bossy, arrogant
attitude. She was a complete opposite now. She was rebellious, and he didn’t
like it that way.
Holding her
book in one hand, Khushi slipped on her flats again and walked down the beach
towards the sidewalk. She knew that once she got home she’ll only hear Arnav
shouting at her for no particular reason.
Her steps were at a normal pace, she wasn’t in a
rush to get home. Whether early, on time, or late, she knew that Arnav was
still going to yell at her.

ReplyDeleteVery emotional update.
ReplyDeleteThe fact that they both don't talk to each other just argue doesn't bode well for any kind of relationship between them.
I feel for both but more for Khushi as she just blames herself as well.
